Designing for a cause requires a balance of immersive storytelling and strategic guest flow. For a recent nonprofit fundraiser at the Santa Barbara Zoo, we moved away from traditional gala decor to execute an “Out of This World” theme, creating a cosmic environment to support the zoo’s conservation and education missions.

Cosmic Installations and Decor

To transform the outdoor venue into a celestial experience, we utilized large-scale installations that played with scale and light. The design featured:

• Hanging Planets: Oversized, illuminated spheres were suspended throughout the event space to create a sense of depth and immersion.

• Astronaut Props: Life-sized astronaut figures were placed strategically to serve as both focal points and photo opportunities for guests.

• Moon Rock Pendants: We installed custom “moon rock” pendant lighting to provide a textured, organic glow over the dining areas.

Neon and Celestial Details

The color palette was driven by deep space tones accented with vibrant neon lighting. We carried the theme through the functional elements of the evening:

• The Bar: The bar fronts featured intricate constellation maps, serving as a subtle but sophisticated nod to the night sky.

• Atmospheric Lighting: Neon washes in purples and blues helped define different zones of the event, from the silent auction to the main stage.

Event Impact

A themed fundraiser at the Santa Barbara Zoo allows donors to experience the grounds in an entirely new light.
