There is something inherently magical about a Santa Barbara summer evening. When Abby and Zach approached me to design their wedding weekend, they wanted their welcome party to be more than just a cocktail hour—they wanted a multi-sensory experience that felt like a chic, sun-drenched escape to the Italian Riviera, right here on the American Riviera.
The result? A high-fashion, high-flavor “Tomato Girl Summer” celebration that set the tone for an unforgettable weekend at the Ritz Carlton Bacara.
The “Tomato Girl” aesthetic is all about effortless elegance, vibrant reds, crisp whites, and a nod to old-world European summers. We leaned into this with:
Tablescapes: Over-flowing bowls of heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil, and striped linens.
Floral Design: We mixed lush dahlias (mainly in reds, with hints of orange) with citrus branches, textured red blooms, and aromatic herbs to create a scent profile as beautiful as the decor.
The Palette: Bold tomato red, creamy linens, and pops of sage green. Guests wore whites and neutrals, and the bride wore an Oscar De La Renta dress with pops of red.
To truly welcome guests, Abby and Zach curated an on-site shopping experience. Instead of a traditional gift bag waiting in a hotel room, guests were invited to “shop” for their weekend essentials. From artisanal freshly picked strawberries to local amenities and treats, it allowed every guest to take a piece of the Santa Barbara lifestyle home with them.
We moved away from a traditional seated dinner in favor of interactive food stations that kept the energy flowing. The menu was a curated journey of the couple’s favorite flavors:
The Sushi Bar: Fresh-caught local seafood prepared with precision.
Gourmet Taco Station: A nod to our Santa Barbara roots with hand-pressed tortillas.
The Snack Pass: Popcorn and light bites served in classic red and white bags
The Sweet Finish: An artisanal ice cream station to cool off as the sun dipped below the horizon.
As guests sipped their martinis and Aperol spritzes, they visited our Typewriter Poet. This is one of my favorite unique activations: guests provided a word or a feeling, and the poet crafted a bespoke, hand-typed poem on vintage paper right before their eyes. It’s a soulful, tangible keepsake that guests cherished.
The key to a successful “Tomato Girl Summer” (or any themed event) is in the cohesion. It’s not just about the color red; it’s about the textures, the smells, and the rhythm of the evening.
“At Tyler Speier Events, we believe the welcome party is the ‘prologue’ to your wedding story. It should be relaxed enough for guests to mingle, but intentional enough to leave them in awe.”
